Tangelo Citrus Tree Diseases

Guide to Reviving Your Tangelo Citrus Tree in Mesa, Gilbert, Sun Lakes, Tempe, Chandler, and Scottsdale.

Fertilizing Your Tangelo Tree

  • Type of Fertilizer: Use a balanced citrus fertilizer specifically formulated for the needs of these trees. Look for an N-P-K ratio (Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium) close to 2-1-1 or 3-1-1.
  • Frequency: Fertilize young tangelo trees (up to 3 years old) about 4-6 times per year. For mature trees, apply fertilizer three times a year – in early spring, late spring, and fall.
  • Amount: This depends on the tree’s age and size. A good starting point is about 1/4 pound of fertilizer for each year of the tree’s age (up to a maximum of 5-6 pounds for mature trees). Consult the fertilizer label for specific dosage instructions.
  • Application Method:
  • Spread fertilizer evenly under the tree’s canopy, extending slightly beyond the drip line (the outermost reach of the branches).
  • Avoid piling fertilizer against the trunk.
  • Water deeply immediately after application to help the nutrients penetrate the soil.

Important Considerations

  • Soil Test: A soil test can determine specific nutrient deficiencies, helping you tailor your fertilizer choice. Contact a local extension service for soil testing options.
  • Slow-Release Fertilizer: Consider using a slow-release fertilizer for gradual nutrient distribution and reduced risk of over-fertilization.
  • Organic Options: Organic fertilizers like blood meal, fish emulsion, or composted manure provide a natural way to nourish your tangelo tree.

Common Fertilization Problems & Solutions

  • Yellowing Leaves: This could indicate iron deficiency, common in alkaline soils like Scottsdale’s. Use a chelated iron supplement or adjust soil pH with sulfur amendments.
  • Nutrient Burn: Brown, crispy leaves can be a sign of over-fertilization. Flush the soil with plenty of water to leach out excess salts.
  • Poor Fruit Production: If your tree is not fruiting well, ensure it has adequate sunlight and water. Prune regularly for good air circulation and to allow sunlight penetration.
